Our Management Team

Shaun J. Oviatt

President
Shaun began his career initially as an equipment operator, first as a teenager working for his father’s company J. Oviatt Contracting in the summer, and later at the age of 22 branching out on his own as an owner–operator with the purchase of a loader. In the last 15 years, Shaun has grown his business from a single loader-for-hire to a fully bonded heavy construction company with operational assets of over $10 million and a full-service mechanical shop.

Shaun is an incredibly talented equipment operator with an equally impressive business acumen and knowledgebase. He has a talent for finding novel solutions and increasing efficiency without sacrificing our clients' needs. In 2005, Shaun was named “Youth Entrepreneur” by the Kitimat Chamber of Commerce, and in 2012 the Prince George Citizen featured him as one of their “Top 40 under 40” for his workmanship and philanthropy.

Outside of work, Shaun enjoys spending time at the family cabins, on Lakelse Lake and on Hudson Bay mountain, as well as ATV-ing with his friends and family.

Cassandra Speers

Construction Safety Officer
We have known Cassandra for years in her role as a Construction Safety Officer for various companies located in Kitimat; her passion for safety as well as her dedication to workers caught our attention early on. Due to Cassandra's stated desire to make a real impact by supporting a growing company of conscientious and dedicated people, she has now joined our team to manage our safety program. She is already well on her way to building on our existing safety culture and elevating us to a new level.

Cassandra has nearly 20 years experience working in safety for a diverse range of environments, particularly the heavy civil construction, pulp and chemical, and smelting industries. She started out as a worker but very quickly came to see that there was a real need for proper worker training in hazardous environments and a lack of a positive safety culture in industry at that time. Her desire to ensure that her fellow workers went home at the end of the day led to her obtaining her safety designation and working as a safety coordinator in addition to her regular duties, then later transitioning to become a dedicated Construction Safety Officer.

Cassandra really focusses on the psychological aspect of why people do the things they do, which translates to helping people understand their ingrained habits and guiding them to make positive changes, often on an individual basis. It is her personalized approach and her passion for helping people that makes Cassandra a great addition to our close-knit team.

Kayla K. Hume

Contracts & Procurement
Kayla has been with Daudet Creek Contracting since 2014 and in her time here she has had a significant impact on the company.

With 10 years of experience in the construction industry, her previous role as an office manager provided the background needed to re-organize internal office processes related to tracking time, equipment, and materials for clear, accurate and more efficient billing. Furthermore, her prior training as a Construction Safety Officer was put to good use shortly after she started with us during a major overhaul of our safety program in 2015. Kayla continues to manage weekly safety meetings for the office staff, act as a certified internal COR auditor, and co-chairs our Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee.

A self-confessed perfectionist, Kayla is also a busy mother of two, and an avid dirt-biker with a passion for interior design and furniture making. Her kind personality and generous nature is evident in her record of involvement in the community, through work via the Kitimat Modernization Project Employee Recognition Committee and as a volunteer at the Kitimat Humane Society and the local Food Bank.

In addition to the work duties above, Kayla is primarily responsible for project control and contract procurement—including estimating, tender completion and our project document control system (QA/QC)—for Daudet Creek Contracting and, as such, acts as Shaun’s right-hand woman.

Katherine Gauer

Chief Financial Officer
With her CPA, CMA, and BComm credentials, Katherine has worked for over 20 years in financial management.

She brings experience from the credit-granting industry, business process system analysis, and business financial planning. Since her arrival in 2015, Katherine facilitated a 4-million-dollar equipment acquisition for Daudet Creek Contracting, and improved the management of the company to ensure the business is being operated correctly from a financial standpoint.

Her approach is about integrity and ethics and we are happy to have her extensive knowledge here to ensure the company’s financial management is second to none.

Mark Pacheco

Operations Manager
Mark first started with our sister company, J. Oviatt Contracting, in 2001 as a labourer. In 2005 he was promoted to Foreman, then in 2018 to Project Manager. During that time, Mark completed his apprenticeship in plumbing and obtained a certificate in business management, bringing these valuable skills back to the company on his return.

Mark’s management skills are evident in the quality of his work, his attention to safety, his push for client satisfaction on every job site, and his focus on detailed documentation and digital solutions. Mark believes in going above and beyond the basic scope requirements on each site and making sure our clients receive value for their money.

In his new position, he is responsible for a wide range of duties, including the on-site supervision of our crews, collaborating on safe-work plans, daily document management and providing quotes for our clients.

While Mark is strongly work-driven—he has even started a contractor business for home renovations and building in his free time—his young family is his highest priority.

Mark’s experience and training are valuable assets to Daudet Creek Contracting and he excels at managing job sites and people, making sure the work meets (and whenever possible) exceeds our client’s expectations.

Gary Hawkins

Equipment Operator Foreman
Gary Hawkins has been working with us longer than any of our other equipment operators—starting with our sister company J. Oviatt Contracting in the mid-90’s—and has even had the pleasure of working with Shaun Oviatt when Shaun was just starting out as an equipment operator!

Most of Gary’s 30+ years of operating has been in civil and industrial construction, although about 5 of those years were spent building roads for the coastal logging industry. Gary’s focus work is getting the job done right, and he has very high standards for the crews he oversees.

He has lived and worked in northwest BC his entire life, and he has a passion for motorized outdoor sports, especially ATV’ing and snowmobiling.

As our most experienced heavy equipment operator, we can say without a doubt that he is one of the finest excavator operators in the region, if not the province.

Larry Greenlaw

Equipment Operator Foreman
Larry is an exceptionally talented equipment operator with extensive experience in BC’s northwest. Born and raised in Kitimat, he has lived, worked, and played in both Kitimat and Terrace, as well as surrounding areas ranging north to the Iskut and south to Kemano.

Larry’s equipment operating career began in his teenage years working for his father’s coastal logging road building business and progressed over the next 30 years to include earthworks, underground service installation, and civil road building. He currently has about 30,000 hours in an excavator, but he also has experience working with other types of heavy equipment, a Class 1 license, and he can even handle a shovel from time to time, which makes him a very versatile employee.

A brief stint in his mid-30’s as a helicopter pilot, where he accrued 3500 incident-free hours, gave Larry a strong appreciation for safety in the workplace. He brought this attitude with him when he returned to the construction industry in 2011.

Larry’s operating abilities, work experience, commitment to safety, and track record managing our crews efficiently has established him as key member of our team.
